Kennedy’s Art Department gathered their creative forces for a combined Spring Art Show and Open Mic on Thursday night.

The art show had ceramics, paintings, photography, linoleum block printing, flip book videos and more. Evidence of Kennedy artists were everywhere, including the art hallway where a new mural of President Kennedy has been started, and will continue to be worked on after spring break.

Norman Stultz, JFK Music Director, led a jazz band made up of present and former students as people wandered through the art and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres served by art student volunteers. Singers joined the open mic in the earlier part of the evening with one group doing a gospel medley that was very popular with the crowd.

Many student athletes attended in their uniforms after their games were over as it was also the first day of the spring sports season. Others came, because they were art students. “It was my very first time going to an art show and I really enjoyed it. I only went so I could get a grade for it, but when I saw that Open Mic was performing, it was worth going,” said Gabriela Garcia, sophomore.

The Art Department wants to institute a Principal’s Purchase Award where the best art will be awarded a cash prize and their art will be on permanent display. They will raise private money to fund the prize. This year was also the first year that other Kennedy teachers could award art with a Teacher’s Award, a sticker that they could apply near the work they liked.

The art teachers were very pleased with the turnout and the evening. “I thought this year was one of the best out of my nine years hosting it because there were more artworks in the show. Plus, parents and students participated more this year,” said Andrea Carroll, ceramics and Foundations of Art teacher.
