Yesterday, IB Theatre spent the class acting in front a green screen. Room 108C was filled with young actors, waiting to utilize the skills they have been honing all year. It was different work than they are used to, as it was limited space without props or visible scenery. The project takes acting and combines it with the advanced technology of OS X, and a film editing program. The primary challenge is creating a story out of nothing. “We have to take the footage that people shot in front of the green screen yesterday and make a narrative story,” said Sojo McKenzie, senior. Since the focus of theatre is primarily live acting, it was a new experience for many. Editing was also a challenge, but one student said, “I’m in video production, so I have done it before.”
The goal is to create a cohesive sequence told in each group. “We’re making up a story using clips with the green screen,” said Esther Kareri, a full IB Diploma senior. With exams coming up, Kareri is almost finished with her requirements for IB. However, many other theatre students are not part of the full IB program. For example, McKenzie has only taken two IB classes and says it “combines my IB Film from last year and my IB Theatre.” To only take a few IB classes is not unusual, as a person can earn certificates depending on their exam scores. These certificates will often be accepted for college credit, depending on the university. Despite that her lack of other IB classes, McKenzie chose the two “because they were awesome, sound electives.”
